I spoke to a current British Ballet Organisation (BBO) Teacher in a similar social and economic context to my own. She was a colleague at a previous appointment and opened her school 3 years before myself. We discussed about my current issue of retaining students at the age of 14 in classical ballet. Her classical ballet classes are of good size and remain this until around the age of 19. We were discussing different teaching techniques and also different classes that were offered. At her school for example Hip Hop/Street Jazz is not offered but is at my dance school which seems to be the distraction for my students. Many questions have come from this:
1. Do I not educate my students enough about the importance of ballet
2. Do my students know of the benefits of ballet and famous faces in musical theatre that have studied ballet
3. Does TV shows such as 'So you think you can dance' influence my students
4. Does the music used put students of
5. Is the Ballet uniform a reason for them leaving classical ballet
I look forward to researching this further with my professional associate comparing both sets of students and also time-tables and techniques used.
